As with conventional bridges, each unit is reported separately: a retainer for every implant and a pontic for every replaced tooth in between. Abutment-supported retainers sit on a separate abutment component; implant-supported retainers connect directly to the implant.
When this treatment is used
Used where several adjacent teeth are missing and there is adequate bone for implants at the ends of the span. It is often more economical than one implant per tooth and produces a fixed result without involving any natural teeth.
Why fewer implants than teeth can work
Implants are strong enough that two well-placed ones can carry a three- or four-unit bridge, which reduces both cost and surgical burden. The limits are biomechanical: the span between implants cannot be too long, cantilevers beyond the end implant are risky, and the bone at each implant site has to be adequate. Full-arch treatment takes this further — four to six implants carrying a complete fixed bridge for an entire jaw. Maintenance access is the design constraint
An implant bridge has to be cleanable underneath, because peri-implantitis is the main long-term threat and it starts with plaque at the implant-tissue junction. A design that looks better but cannot be cleaned with a brush or floss threader is a poor trade. Screw-retained designs that can be removed by the dentist for professional cleaning are a real advantage on longer spans. Ask how the bridge will be cleaned at home and whether it can be removed at maintenance visits — the answers should be specific.
